The Foothills Trail runs through Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina, totaling 77 miles. Through-hikers typically hike the trail in 5-10 days. Hiking the entirety from Oconee State Park to Table Rock State Park gets you the Peregrine Award, the thru-hikers status. The trail boast a number of scenic waterways and bridge crossings, stunning waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. The trail also crosses South Carolina’s high point, Sassafras Mountain.
Early this October RRT’ers Will “Leapfrog” Babb and Dalton “Cast Iron” Spurlin will head out to hike the Foothills Trail in just 5 days. Join us as Dalton shares his experience on the trail and how you can plan your own outing.

Reading a map can be intimidating, understanding some basics of topo lines, map keys, and scale will help you better plan for any adventure. This talk by RRT’er Joe Carver, will look at the basics needed to plan a trip and execute that game plan without hiccups. Know how to read mileage, elevation, features of terrain, find water sources and camp grounds, and so much more. Joe will also cover compass basics like how to orient a map, understand declination, and set a bearing. Even if you are working with digital maps, these skills will make you a more confident and safer adventurer. This talk may just spike your interest in an orienteering class or competition, or make you the group leader in planning your next trek!
